Robot vacuum questions, answered

21 common questions, with sources.

Are robot vacuums worth it?

Yes, as a daily maintenance cleaner. A robot keeps floors tidier between deep cleans, but it doesn’t pull dirt out of deep carpet the way an upright or canister vacuum does.

Wirecutter found that a robot running about an hour every other day keeps a home noticeably tidier than vacuuming by hand now and then. Robots suit homes with pets or kids, people with limited mobility, and anyone who won’t vacuum often. They suit cluttered floors, tall door sills and homes that need deep carpet cleaning less well.

What are the downsides of a robot vacuum?

Less suction than an upright, weaker on dirt deep in carpet, and gaps along baseboards and in corners. Robots also get stuck on cords, socks and rug tassels, so you tidy up before each run.

You’ll keep buying bags, filters, brushes and, after a few years, a battery. Docks that wash mops take up floor space. Connected robots also raise privacy questions, which is why Consumer Reports scores data privacy and security for each robot it rates.

What goes wrong with robot vacuums most often?

Hair wrapped around the brush. In Consumer Reports’ member surveys, 36% of robot vacuum owners reported it. Next come battery problems (21%), clogs (15%), dirty filters (14%), app or online problems (13%) and Wi-Fi problems (12%).

Owners of vacuum and mop combos report much the same: tangles 24%, app problems 17%, clogs 16%, Wi-Fi 13% and filters 10%. Combos haven’t been owned as long, so treat those numbers as early. The makers of all eleven robots on this site say the main brush resists tangles. Problems, downsides and what to avoid.

How long do robot vacuums last?

About 4 to 6 years. The battery usually fades first, after 2 to 4 years.

Dyson’s guide puts brushes at 6 to 12 months and filters at 3 to 6 months. Most robots keep going with a new battery and fresh parts, so before you replace one, check whether the broken part is sold on its own. Consumer Reports judges reliability over the first four years of ownership. Lifespan and maintenance.

What maintenance does a robot vacuum need?

Empty or replace the dock bag, shake out the filter every few runs, cut hair off the brush, and wipe the sensors and charging contacts now and then.

Wirecutter suggests replacing filters and side brushes a few times a year and the main brush about once a year. Docks that wash mops also need their water tanks emptied and rinsed. Wirecutter warns that a third-party filter in the robot can complicate a warranty repair.

Should a robot vacuum stay on its dock?

Yes, between runs. Ecovacs says its robots switch to trickle charging when the battery is full and recommends keeping them docked, and Dyson gives the same advice.

For storage over weeks or months, follow the manual for your model.

Why are robot vacuums so expensive?

The price climbs with the dock and the sensors. A dock that empties the bin, washes mops in hot water, dries them with warm air and refills the tank costs far more than a plain charger, and camera or LiDAR navigation adds more.

Vacuum Wars puts capable robots under $300 and the best value between $300 and $1,000, and says models above $1,000 mostly add automation for edge cases. Wirecutter (July 13, 2026) says a decent vacuum and mop combo starts around $500 to $600. The eleven robots on this site cost $315.00 to $1,599.99 at the makers’ stores (checked Oct 23, 2026).

How do I choose a robot vacuum?

Start with your home: floor types, rugs, door sills, pets, clutter and how low your furniture sits. Then compare the robots that fit, and look at independent test results.

With lots of carpet or pets, look at carpet cleaning and anti-tangle brushes. With cluttered floors, obstacle avoidance matters most. For hands-off cleaning, get a self-emptying dock, and measure first, because docks that wash mops are large. Don’t rely on headline suction. Brands measure Pa differently, and Vacuum Wars says higher numbers don’t always clean better. Our robot finder does this matching for the eleven robots we track.

Are robot vacuums banned in the US?

No. Models the FCC authorized before July 28, 2026 can still be sold, and robots people already own keep working. Since that date, new foreign-made models can’t get FCC authorization without a Conditional Approval.

Are robot vacuum and mop combos worth it?

For mostly hard floors that you’d like mopped often, yes. For mostly carpet, a vacuum-only robot usually cleans carpet better and has fewer parts to fail.

Wirecutter rates combos as good daily maintenance cleaners but notes the trade-offs: they cost more, the docks are big, more parts can fail, and they can spread a wet mess. Consumer Reports found that most combos vacuum carpet worse than robots that only vacuum. Either way, keep an upright or stick vacuum for deep cleaning.

Do robot vacuums work on hardwood floors?

Yes, and they rarely scratch them: ECOVACS says most modern robots don’t scratch hardwood or vinyl. Most of the robots here also mop; check your flooring maker’s care guide before you set the water level.

Do robot vacuums scratch hardwood floors?

Rarely. ECOVACS says most modern robots don’t scratch hardwood or vinyl, and that trapped grit, hard objects stuck in the wheels or brush, and stiff brushes cause the scratches that do happen.

Pick up small hard objects before a run and keep the wheels and brush clean.

Are robot vacuums good on carpet?

They keep carpet tidy, but Consumer Reports says deep cleaning, especially carpet, still needs an upright or canister vacuum. It also found that most vacuum and mop combos clean carpet less well than robots that only vacuum.

Up to a point. The makers of the robots on our site rate them for sills from 0.67 in to 1.77 in, and two don’t publish a figure. Measure your highest sill first.

Will a robot vacuum fit under my sofa?

Measure the gap. The robots on our site stand 3.14 in to 4.53 in tall by their makers’ figures (one doesn’t publish its height), so a low sofa may only fit the slimmest.

Is it OK to run a robot vacuum every day?

Generally yes; robot apps let you schedule daily runs. With pets, Vacuum Wars recommends scheduling runs more often so hair doesn’t build up. More runs wear brushes and filters sooner, so plan for parts.

Compare the maker’s own store with big retailers on return window and warranty, not just price. iRobot’s own store offers a 60-day home trial, and Dreame gives its robot vacuums 3 years on the robot and dock (1 year on the battery) when bought from Dreame or its US Amazon store.
