Will a robot vacuum scratch hardwood?

Rarely, if you look after it. ECOVACS, which makes robot vacuums, lists the usual causes: sand or small stones caught under the robot, hard objects such as nails or toy bricks stuck in the wheels or brush, stiff brushes on delicate finishes, and dirt that builds up when the robot isn’t cleaned.

• Pick up small hard objects before a run, or mark the area as a no-go zone in the app.
• Clean the wheels, brush and bin regularly; see maintenance and lifespan.
• Prefer a rubber or soft main brush. “Anti-tangle” on its own doesn’t tell you how stiff a brush is; the table below gives each maker’s description.

Mopping wood floors

Most of the robots here also mop. Wood and laminate don’t like standing water, so check your flooring maker’s care guide before you set the water level, and keep mopping to floors it allows. A roller rinses itself as it goes; spinning pads scrub as they turn. Compare every vacuum and mop combo.

Edges and baseboards

Dust collects along baseboards, where a round robot reaches least. Seven of the robots here push their mop out toward the edge.
